A mindblowing disc, which shows what the medium is truly capable of.
. .
Regarded by some as the movie that kick-started the modern special effects revolution, T2 can still pass muster as one of sci-fi's finest offerings, especially with a DVD this good. Momentum's long-delayed disc package has been well worth the wait, boasting awe-inspiring extras, a THX-certified 'optimode' to help you fine-tune your TV picture to give the best results, and best of all, thunderous audio.
.
You can choose from Dolby Digital® Surround EX or DTS®-ES Matrix 6.1 sound, and both, in the right system, sound extraordinary.

In the last great invasion, of the last great war, the greatest danger for eight men... was saving one.

One of the greatest surround mixes ever, this boasts jaw-dropping complexity of effects:
the fury of the opening sequence is as visceral listening experience as any in cinema history. Power, steering effects and sheer scale blend to make the experience almost shattering in its impact. Another Gary Rydstrom surround mix, another Oscar-winner (1999), and boy, was it well earned.

Only the movie would be worth the money, but there's a second disc, full of special features that look great! Buy the widescreen edition, not the fullscreen one, because when the movie is formatted to fit in your TV screen, many images and details are lost. And it would be a crime to lose "The Lord of the Rings" details!!

What a riot! This sequel to Jackie Chan's original adds more fun, more action and more laughs. Chris Tucker steals the show in a highly enjoyable romp following a gangster ring from Hong Kong to America.
The fight scenes are in true Jackie Chan fashion but keep you glued to the screen as the choreography is utterly superb! Viewed on the big screen the action sequences are amazing, whilst the sound is tremendous, with the explosions thumping through every bone in your body.

"'The man who wasn't there' is one of the best films yet from the Coen brothers." - Richard Roeper
.
The Coen Brothers are back with a dark and twisted film noir unlike anything you've ever seen. Set in a small 1949 California town, this is the story of a seemingly simple barber, who turns to blackmail and revenge to escape his achingly dull life. But in the tradition of classic noir, nothing goes as planned and nothing is as it seems. And as the barber's plot unravels, the delicious surprises, stunning revelations and just plain strange occurrences will disturb and delight you long after the film has ended.

Hometheatersound by Jeff Van Dyne
U-571 - In particular, I use chapters 15 through 17. On the audio side, this is a great test for creating a three-dimensional soundfield with pinpoint placement of creaks, groans and other background noises from the submarine. All the depth-charge explosions make for a good test of dynamics and bass definition too.
.
By Jeff Fritz
U-571 - The DTS® version of U-571 provides reference quality audio in several areas. The combination of subtle sounds, such as the water dripping from the exposed pipes in the submarine, will test the ability of your system to communicate details, while dialogue and other primary sounds are in the forefront of the surround mix.
The use of split surrounds will test your setup with respect to your surround speakers. Can you hear the soundtrack as a 360-degree soundfield?
Dynamics are also on display in great measure. The depth-charge blasts throughout the movie will test your system's ability to reproduce both the low-frequency shock waves and the high-frequency water/shrapnel combinations. These scenes in particular are difficult for a subwoofer that is not capable of keeping up with the start-on-a-dime bomb blasts. This type of scene is much more difficult for subwoofers than a simple rumble here or there.
It needs to punch through the air and into your chest to sound realistic. U-571 is a hard-hitting soundtrack that will test even the best systems. It does not have a great music but its explosive effects are some of the very best.
.
U-571 - Collector's Edition
The movie is thrilling, and it gets better with the surround sound provided by the DVD (you can choose between DTS® and Dolby®, but hey are all the same!). The extras have many infos about the production, about the real Second World War and about the Enigma. Really fascinating!

.
Home Theater & Sound
Mission: Impossible 2 - This is an extraordinary sonic delight, and one of the best Dolby Digital® soundtracks I've heard. The musical score by Hans Zimmer is expertly mixed with 5.1 effects to create a virtual cornucopia of sounds that simply stun the senses. As much as I like the Gladiator music track, which is even better than the M:I-2 composition, the surround effects take this movie over the top.
To get a truly winning combination, you must have excellent use of the surrounds, clear, rich dialog, and amusical score that balances evenly with dynamic surround effects. It is precisely this balance of musical score and effects that creats the magic. The movie is truly enhanced and the mood is set with the soundtrack. I did not find myself focusing on the sound, but enjoying the ride director John Woo offers.
Only after reflecting and watching the movie again did I realize how remarkable the audio really is.
The sound of this disc is never harsh, which allows you to use a volume level that lets the dynamic sequences come to life, but not at the expense of your ears. Even though U-571 is a reference in some specific areas, M:I-2 is at the top of the heap all around.

Vanilla Sky
Scale of Justice: Video - 100; Audio - 98.
Film Rating: A+
(Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1)
RM115
Tested once, but in New condition.
Online Review:
The video comes in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and is of the high standard that you would expect from a major movie made. The image is crisp and detailed, with no dirt or grain and plenty of contrast.
Acclaimed Oscar winning director, Cameron Crowe teams up with a top notch cast including Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Kurt Russell and Jason Lee for the drama Vanilla Sky, a love story with a twist - a remake of the Spanish film "Open Your Eyes."
Tom Cruise delivers one of his finest performancees in this unforgettably powerful film that reunites him with Cameron Crowe, the director of Jerry Maguire.
Young, handsome and wealthy, publishing tycoon David Aames (Cruise) can have anything his heart desires. Still, David's charmed life seems incomplete. One night, David meets the woman of his dreams (Penelope Cruz) and believes he may have found the missing piece. But a fateful encounter with a jealous lover (Cameron Diaz) suddenly sends David's world out of control, rocketing him on a roller-coaster ride of romance, sex, suspicion and dreams... to a shocking, final awakening you will never forget.

1. An Ideal Husband
This is an ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) Reference Quality DVD
Film Rating: A+
(Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1)
RM125
Tested once, but in New condition.
Online Review:
An outstanding transfer, An Ideal Husband is alive with glorious detail as crisp as any I've seen on DVD.
Take a gander at all that jewelry. Each pearl is finely delineated. The magnificent carpets are ablaze in complex colour patters without bleeding onto each other. Even the score adds a droll note or two to the proceedings.
Certified by Imaging Science Foundation (ISF), U.S.A. to be the Ultimate Reference DVD.
.
Editorial Reviews:
For truly clever dialogue and a smartly structured plot, you can't go wrong with Oscar Wilde. Wilde's play An Ideal Husband is not his best known, but his film adaptation has all the wit you could ask for and a cast with the chops to deliver it: Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Minnie Driver, Jeremy Northam, and especially Rupert Everett, who tosses off perfect epigrams with unflappable aplomb.
The plot hinges on Northam, a member of Parliament with a skeleton in his closet who is blackmailed into a shady business deal by a lady of mystery (Moore), who turns out to be a loathed school chum of the parliamentarian's wife (Blanchett). Everything is resolved happily, but not until after some devious twists of fate, several mistaken identities, lots of comic banter, and much social skewering. Wilde, who came to ruin when his homosexuality was brought to light, has a sharp eye for hyprocrisy and the artificial poses demanded by society - but political commentary never gets in the way of a smart laugh.
Visually sumptuous and briskly paced, An Ideal Husband will satisfy anyone looking for social satire or romantic comedy.

The Criterion Collection
Beastie Boys Video Anthology
2-Disc Set
(Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1, Stereo) Film Rating: A+
RM125
New set, never even played once.

Review:
The Beastie Boys Video Anthology is a two-disc set featuring 18 videos with more than 40 remixes by Beastie Boys, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Fred C, Mario Caldato, etc... , including many new remixes created exclusively for this release.

This is another of those Criterion special editions, presented here in a superlative two disc set chock full of superb material.

There is so much on offer here it's hard to know where to start - there are multi-angle presentations for a large proportion of the videos, plus audio remixes which can be switched on the fly using the audio button on the remote. As well as this there are commentaries for each video from the director and the Beastie Boys themselves, making the whole package astounding value for money. And I haven't even scratched the surface of the entire contents !

Sound is presented here in Dolby Digital 5.1 (downmixing to Pro Logic for the remixes) the quality is excellent. Most striking for 5.1 owners is the opening video of Intergalactic - which possesses bass so fierce it'll have your speakers dancing away with you! This continues for every video - giving the music incredible dimension and punch.

If you can find this then I throughly recommend you buy a copy, if you're not a Beastie Boys fan I still recommend it to you but only to see how a music DVD should be done - whole-heartedly impressive I guarantee !

The Criterion Collection
Royal Tenenbaums
DIRECTOR APPROVED ~ Wes Anderson SPECIAL EDITION
(Audio: DTS & Dolby Digital 5.1)
The Golden Globe Award 2002 - Best Actor (Comedy/Musical): Gene Hackman
The Academy Award Nominees 2002 for Best Original Screenplay
2-Disc Set
Film Rating: A+
RM125
Tested once, but as New condition.

Review:
Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline had three children - Chas, Richie and Margot, and then they separated. Chas (Ben Stiller) started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) was a playwright and received a Braverman Grant of fifty thousand dollars in the ninth grade. Richie (Luke Wilson) was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure and disaster. Most of this was generally considered to be their father's fault. The Royal Tenenbaums is the story of a family of geniuses and their sudden, unexpected reunion one winter.

Another great mix is 'Fight Club'. This one was up against The Matrix in the Sound Effects Editing category at the Academy Oscars. It lost, as you already know. In terms of the sound design, the movies are even. But in terms of the quality of the sound on the DVD, this one edges is out, but not by much. Everything from the mid-air collision to each punishing hit sounds extra painful. Turn the subwoofer up on this one.

Review:
The 10 Best Sounding DVDs
"My personal choice for showing off my system is the airplane sequence during Fight Clut. While it's not very long, it simply uses your system to it's full capacity. The rest of the movie isn't that bad either, it fills the air with an ambiance that most movies don't come close to. Surround effects are used in the perfect places and the soundtrack rocks. A gread, (and again, my personal choice) reference-quality disc!"
- DVD Authority
.
Synopsis:
In the darkly comic drama "Fight Club", based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, Edward Norton plays a young man fed up with the meaninglessness of his life and the world around him. His lack of fulfullment from all that he buys and his isolation from others lead him to crash support groups for people with terminal illnesses just so he can have someone to talk to.
That is until he meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a soap salesman who is more into the raw experiences of life. The two become friends, and move into a rundown house with no upscale ammenities. One night, the two get into a friendly bare-fisted brawl and the charge they both feel from the experience makes them continue the fights as a weekly practice. The Saturday night fight ritual begins to draw others, and soon the two friends have created a set of rules to manage all the guys who want to join the Fight Club.
But bonding through violence can hold disasterous consequences, and when fellow support-group-crasher Maria Singer (Bonham Carter) gets involved with Tyler, the freedom-through-fighting mood begins to shift.

Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai
Film Rating: A+
Movie Rating: 10
RM128
New set, never played before.
.
Providing the template a million American action film would follow (including an almost direct remake in John Sturges' The Magnificent Seven), Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai delivers a simplistic narrative and renders it flawlessly.
Taking the essence of the John Ford Westerns he admired so much, Kurosawa set about delivering what would become his finest film. Seven Samurai represents a heady combination of exhilarating battle scenes and involving characterisation.
One of the greatest films ever made.

Brimming with action while incisively examining the nature of truth, Rashomon is perhaps the finest film ever to investigate the philosophy of justice. Through an ingenious use of camera and flashbacks, Kurosawa reveals the complexities of human nature as four people recount different versions of the story of a man's murder and the rape of his wife. Toshiro Mifune gives another commanding performance in the eloquent masterwork that revolutionized film language and introduced Japanese cinema to the world.
